Snapchat goes corporate

Snapchat has become hugely popular way to send untraceable messages that self-destruct. So much so that it has captured the imagination of the corporate world keen to try this non-permanent communication approach.

Business is increasingly turning to this short-term, seemingly secure messaging mode. In response competitors to Snapchat are emerging to address the specific needs of business such as Confide, a text-based iOS app.

Aimed at professionals, these apps are being embraced by people who have been burnt by email’s inherent confidentiality problems.

Snapchat’s growth is mainly due to its group messaging capability. In effect it makes a mass ‘mailing’ seem like a personal one. In this way people feel engaged with the process and more likely to share more content via that same medium.

There are some serious roadblocks to be considered, however, stemming from the regulatory frameworks that have underpinned business efficacy such as Sarbannes Oxley which demands the preservation (rather than destruction) of business communications.

Where the debate will take the everyday application of short-term visual messaging apps is yet to be determined. Perhaps the onus for compliance will be pushed onto the user.

Meanwhile – business should watch this space.
